In January 1966, I arrived in Berlin by train, which I believe put things
more in perspective than if I had flown into Tempelhof or Tegel airports. I was able to
see the isolation, the sense of being confined as soon as I arrived in that wonderful
city. I spent 33 months in Berlin, leaving in October 1968. It was a memorable time, and
one which I will always cherish. The Berliners were wonderful people, and I, like John
Kennedy, will always consider myself to be a Berliner.
I have written a book about my stay in Berlin, serving with the 78th ASA
( later the 54th ASA, then later, Field Station Berlin). It's entitled "C Trick: Sort
