Hi,
I went to Berlin in 1990 and I brought a 15 cm piece of Berlin wall with me. I travelled around Europe for 15 days with this piece on my back. I'd like to sell it. If there is anyone interested please let me know.

Thank you for making this website. I have to do a speech by memorization for my Language Arts class and I chose "Ich bin ein Berliner" by John F. Kennedy. This was a lot of help in looking up background information. The people who are my distant relatives in Germany who went through this recomended this site to me.

i was stationed in w. berlin from 1974-77, i worked at checkpoint charlie about 5 days a month for three years. if you go to photos 1974 and look at the photo on the bottom, you will see the building on the left near the wall. on the top floor of that building we had a small room with a small window and we watched the boarder from that spot. one person manned the lookout spot for 1hour at a time and 3 army mp's were in the hut in the middle of the road. believe it or not we traded hats, buckles and you name it with the east german guards.

Just had my 3rd visit to Berlin in 2002. You have a good site here and I browse it often. With luck by December 2002, I am moving in with my partner to live in Berlin. One question, where did all the rubble of the Berlin wall go to, and can you still buy real amounts of it?

William North Wales
Sat, 19 Oct 2002

Comments:
The concrete sections of the Berlin Wall were used as road building material.
You can still buy real amounts of Berlin Wall but many pieces were painted by the sellers.

Hi, I am a lady from Evarts Kentucky, My name is Rachel Brock. I am writing to say "down here you hardly ever hear anything mentioned about the Berlin wall" I just found details out on the Berlin wall a few months ago, and now i love reading about it i have ordered books and even looked at different web sites... I really do enjoy learning about the Berlin Wall.

i just wanted to say that when Kennedy said "ich bin ein berliner" the crowd laughed at him. what he actually said was "i'm a jelly doughnut" ein is an artical and changes the meaning of he word berliner. your info is wrong!

woody
Tue, 08 Oct 2002

Comments:
The German word "Berliner" has two senses.
It means resident of Berlin but it is also used for
jelly doughnuts outside of Berlin.
"Ein Berliner" means a resident of Berlin (one of many others).
"Ich bin ein Berliner" means: I'm a resident of Berlin. That's what Kennedy said and the crowd was very happy that he said these German words and really no one laughed at him.

Very good homepage about the berlin wall, we got a lot of good information.

Hi,

I was stationed in Berlin from Jan 1961 to Dec 1964.
I was assigned to the 11th CID for part of that time and served as an interpreter at Checkpoint Charlie and on the Autobahn. I did a lot of interpreting for LTC Robert Sabolyk, who was the Provost Marshal during part of that time. Later I did the same thing but at G2, BBde, then G2 Allied Staff.
Were you in the 287th MPs? I don't recognize your name.
Enjoyed your Web Site.
Would like to correspond or talk to you as I, and Dick Topping, ex 78the ASA are writing a book on Berlin.
I was at Charlie on Aug 17th when Peter Fechter

I was stationed in Berlin from 1972-1975 as a US Army Photographer assigned to Brigade HQ. Berlin was the greatest duty station I ever had. The people were great. After all of these years not a day goes by without me thinking of it and the people.

A real great site. I'm from germany and I was looking for a site that can offer me informations about the Berlin Wall. I found everything I needed for our schoolproject. I think the english part of this page is better then the german part cause I found more detailed informations about the currency (1:6) and other details. However, It's a great site and I will give the URL to my friends that they will enjoy it, too.

A very good website which certainly gives the uninitiated an excellent introduction to the wall. A little more on the history of the wall would add to it though. The reasons why the Allies and the Russians wanted it built, etc.

In 1985 I was stationed at McNair Kaserne located in Zehlendorf ecke Platz am 4. Juli. I was a soldier and I never dreamed in all my time there that the wall would be coming to an end of any kind. Thank God it did for the freedom of the folks of the then East Berlin and surrounding areas. It was always interesting to look at the otherside and the guards in the towers watching us run along the Berlin Wall in the mornings along the Teltow Canal gor fitness. My memories are that of mostly difficult times in dealing with certain aspects of the Wall and the consequences that went along with it. It is now a most challenging time for germany as a whole to fully become united and deal with the economic travesty of the past and present for the people of the Easstern part of Germany and Berlin. To ignore the Easterners and to say they have much to catch up upon and relearn is no good either. All must work together to get everyone back to work and the new generation into schools for a proper education rather than being propagandized as their parents and grandparents were when the wall went up or for that matter, before the wall went up in the first place. It is my fondest hope to return to Berlin and to see the changes myself after being sent from Berlin to Central America in 1989 only to leave the Army after injury in combat in Panama in that same year or rather 1990. God Bless to you all Wie ich lange zu in Deutschland wieder sein. Und auch so in Berlin wo mein herz ist dabei.

Great site, but I think it needs quite a bit of re-editing...The fact that divided is spelled wrong twice, in different ways, and a few other mistakes take away from the professional look of the site, thus making the information less believable. Thank You!!

Berlin was and still is a great city. I and have many fond memories of it. I served there with the 1st. Battalion K.O.S.B.sometime around 1959 - 60. Billeted in Brooke Barracks, Spandau. Did the guard-change thing, alongside the Americans, French, Russians and watched shadows at night on the walls of Spandau Kaserne hoping Rudolph Von Hess would make his big break (he was in his seventies then I believe). While I dreamt about my cold bier und bratwurst awaiting me at "Das Ecke Cafe," auch in Das Grunevald Forest and on the beaches long the River Havel. "Ah Berlin".du bis so schon. Please all German readers, forgive my lack of umlauts.

A great web site that brought back fond memories, thanks, Harry
